My Story

Sensei and Dojo founder Tony Shamp

My martial arts origin story truly began in 1998, the year I graduated high school.  As elementary youth I had briefly trained Judo.  However, in 7th and 8th grade I studied Okinawan Karate until the instructor closed the school.  I was close to earning my brown belt at the time and knew that when the time was right I would return to martial arts.  However, the journey to Black belt in Judo and Jujitsu began in earnest as an 18 year old adult recent high school graduate.  While my journey was not always linear, I never stopped in my quest towards Black Belt.  After moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 2009, and dedicating myself anew to the Judo journey, I earned my Judo Black Belt (Shodan).  My wife and I moved back to Montana in 2013 and I earned my Danzan Ryu (Hawaiian-Japanese Jujitsu) Black Belt in 2015.  In 2017, I was promoted to Nidan (2nd degree) and the title of Sensei.  In 2023, I tested for Sandan (3rd Degree).  Finally in 2024, I opened my first official CJA dojo Mauka Inago in Missoula, MT.  During the 10 years+ that I had been back to Missoula, I had been operating Missoula Judo and was excited to also promote my first Black Belt (Judo) that year.  Our Judo club also started regular kids classes in 2024 whereas we had previously only been offering adult training.  I look forward to the challenges and triumphs of 2025 and beyond and would be honored to help you in your martial arts journey.
